DIY I'd like to try

Back to routine – DIY I’d like to try

I, for one,  am very excited to get back to a routine. I missed regular workouts. I missed kiddos who are more content. And I missed DIY and crafting. We did our fair share of kid related DIY throughout the summer. Don’t get me wrong, that’s fun. It really is. But know I thought I’d spend a little time dreaming up some DIY that is a little more fun for me!

School is starting back up here in Arizona. I know some of my nieces have already gone back and M started back on August 9th! I’ve mentioned it before but summer is hard for us. It’s a combination of the intense AZ heat and the lack of routine that get us down. We enjoyed having regular playdates with friends this summer but we are even more excited for school! First few weeks are done and everyone is happier.

I’m very slowly working on fixing up my girls room in a rainbow theme. Here is some of the inspiration that I’m pulling from. Although I don’t like to copy someone else’s DIY exactly it does help to get those creative juices flowing! M has been asking for a growth chart for about a year, so I think it’s time I finally got that going :-/

There are so many amazing accessory DIY’s out there right now! My budget for accessories is nil but since I’m a crafty one I’ve got a lot of materials to work with and can make my own! I plan on making a couple of different pieces of jewelry soon as they are quick and fulfilling. These are just a few that are inspiring me currently.

Three for Thursday - Quality time with McKenna

Three for Thursday – Quality time with McKenna

Thursdays are generally a pretty busy day for us over here. We have some of my nieces over every week and we have a lot of fun! Although it’s amazing it means that I don’t have oodles of time to post. Enter “Three for Thursday”. This series is going to be a day where I focus on a DIY topic that I’ve been meaning to give thought, time and energy to but simply haven’t scheduled that time in. Thursdays are that day now!

This week I’m thinking about what I can do to spend quality time with McKenna. She has been a super trooper since Drea was born (and even before that when I was miserable during the last 4 months of pregnancy). She has also started acting out a bit more. I told someone about a month ago that I had to put McKenna in time out for the first time. Overall, she has always been a good listener and does the things I ask. The most I ever had to do was count to 3. It’s a different story nowadays. People say it’s because she’s three years old now but I think it’s because she needs more attention. I do my very best to give her attention but when Drea is screaming her head off I have to admit that she comes first. SO, all that to say that I started trolling my Pins for a few things that McKenna would enjoy. As I was going through stuff I had pinned to do with her I found a few themes that she enjoys which I think is perfect! Without further adieu here are our Three for Thursday!

Dinosaur LoveDinosaur Hat Dinosaur Feet

Dinosaur DIY’s:

McKenna adores dinosaurs! She also loves crafting (really any DIY) with her mama and pretend play so I figured let’s kill two (errrr three I guess?) birds with one stone! We are gonna have a DIY  dinosaur day next week! I may even see if I can put a couple of dinosaur books on hold at the library to round it out.

Gardening LoveGardening Sensory Bin Gardening Sensory Bin (with printable!)

Gardening DIY’s:

Lately McKenna has been obsessed with gardening. I got a gardenia plant for my birthday a few months ago and she helps me to water it every. single. day. I guess it’s good because I’m a pretty forgetful person and she often reminds me! Maybe she will be my little DIY gardener. I found a couple of interesting gardening sensory bins we could easily DIY and I figure we’ve been wanting to do more sensory bins so this will be on the agenda next week!

Mermaid LoveMermaid Tail  /  Mermaid Peg Dolls

Mermaid DIY’s:

Even though she skips through big chunks of The Little Mermaid it may be one of her favorite movies. She loves the idea of mermaids as they seem so magical to her. There are so many fun mermaid DIY activities! The first picture above is an activity that I have been wanting to do for her for almost a year. A year people! I can’t believe I’ve let it get away from me for this long. The mermaid peg dolls I found recently in a search for a mermaid sensory bin. I wanted inexpensive mermaids that we could add. It was a bonus that we could work on designing them together.

Life isn’t about pinning. It’s about doing. Pin less, Do more! I will share more after we’ve completed these activities! What are you going to do this fabulous Thursday?

What we've been up to lately

What we’ve been up to lately

It’s been a few weeks with no posts – eeek! I have so much going on and haven’t had time to put in here. We all know how it goes, life happens. So, let’s start with the fun stuff…

I had my gender reveal party! It was an absolute blast and I’m excited to post pics and the gender here pretty soon.

My house got listed for sale! It was a LOT of work getting our house ready and I will be posting about that, the process and of course the pretty pictures that I now have of my house.

I’ve started watching a little girl a few days a week to help out a friend who just got promoted and needs to go into the office more often now. It’s been great to have someone around McKenna’s age on a more regular basis to help McKenna get used to the idea of a new little sibling coming soon. She has never been the jealous type and has always shared really well… until the last few months. HA! I have some thoughts on this that I will share more of later.

This pregnancy has been all kinds of rough. I’ve gotten sick a lot, dehydrated several times and so worn down that I couldn’t do much more than sit on the couch and watch McKenna play. Things are going a little better now but I know I need to be much more careful about taking care of myself FIRST.

I missed capturing my thoughts and feelings here so I’m glad to be back!

when and why I don't always DIY

When (and why)I don’t always DIY

As I’ve mentioned, we are preparing our house to sell right now and there is A LOT to do. If you’ve ever sold a house you know how much there is to do that you just didn’t notice. Over time you get blinders to those annoying little things that are a part of your home. Along with these little things we also just had a big monsoon which caused some roof problems. Agh! Part of why I’ve been MIA is because of the roof problems. Oh and there is also the pregnancy that is keeping me down low, and of course preparing this house to sell during the HOT Arizona summer…. Enough rambling and back to the reason for the blog post. I LOVE to DIY… or at least try my hand at it. That much should be obvious. So why would I NOT want to DIY something? There are a few good reasons not to DIY and here are some of the things that I am not going to be DIYing for the preparation of this house.

I have a long list of things that need to get done around here, including:

  • Small plumbing, such as tightening some small leaks, etc.
  • Filling screw holes
  • Cleaning
  • Painting the stairways
  • Filling the hole from the dog door to the patio
  • Deep cleaning the carpet
  • THE ROOF – ha!
  • Re-carpeting the master bedroom
  • Purging soooo much stuff
  • Reorganizing furniture

What we will be DIYing:

  • Getting rid of all the things
  • Cleaning and cleaning some more
  • Moving light furniture and styling with my realtor
  • Brandon will be moving heavier pieces of furniture that we don’t want in the house during the sale process
  • I’ve filled some of the screw holes already… I will get into that more in what I won’t be DIYing

What we will not be DIYing:

  • Plumbing…. I have actually tackled some plumbing fixes before, but seeing as I’m pregnant I don’t think I’m gonna be getting on the ground for fear that I won’t be able to get up!
  • Filling screw holes that require a step stool or ladder. Another thing that I could normally do, but I’m not stable to begin with and being pregnant I’m even less so
  • Deep cleaning the carpets. Chemicals upon chemicals – no thanks
  • Painting – I may actually do a few small areas that need touch up if they don’t require a step stool but if it does I’m out and for large surfaces I’m also out.
  • Recarpeting is something that I’ve never tried so I’m not gonna try at this juncture.
  • We are getting our roof fixed, yay!

Some of these things are hard for me to pay someone else to do when I know that usually I can tackle a lot of these things. I have had to take a deep breath and be ok with not being able to do it all. The stuff we are doing is already a lot! We are up to seven nine SUV loads that we have brought to Goodwill! It’s amazing how much we have been able to get rid of. It has felt really good to unload a lot of stuff, and it’s even better seeing clear spaces in my home.  I’ve been really grateful to have some amazing friends and family who have helped me out and I know that without their help (and some professionals in the near future!) I couldn’t do this. In the beginning I was thinking that I could do it all on my own. It only took me a minute to realize that was ludicrous. Don’t be too hard on yourselves and be honest when you can’t (or maybe even don’t want to) do it yourself.

McKenna and mama at her first birthday - Circus themed 1st birthday

I love to party – how to throw a themed party

I really do. It’s such a blast for me to plan parties and then of course I love to go to parties as well. I think it’s because I love themes so much. I use themes to  decorate rooms, put together gifts and of course to plan parties!

I am working through plans for our gender reveal right now but I’m getting stuck for some reason. Because of my party planning rut I thought it might help to revisit some of the parties that I’ve planned in the last few years. Some of these I have pictures from but most I do not. I tend to sit back and enjoy my parties instead of taking pictures.

When I was single I threw a few fun parties that were vaguely themed, such as a fondue party, holiday themed dinners and parties, etc.  Then I moved into my next phase where I wanted to do more than just make food and decorate. I decided that I wanted to dress up! Sometimes not in the typical sense… And other times it was!

I proceeded to throw a masquerade (one of my favorites), a Vegas themed birthday for one of my hubby’s birthdays and one of my favorites was McKenna’s 1st birthday which was circus themed.

Some of my favorite pieces of a party to plan are the following:

  • Themed food
  • Decorations
  • Costumes
  • Invitations
  • Suspense!

Themed Food

Food is a really important part of life let alone a party. I like to make the food work with the theme of the party as much as possible. For my husband’s birthday party that was Vegas themed everything was red, white and black and I made everything work within that theme. I also really like to make signs for the food that show how each group of food goes with the theme. It’s quick and it’s an easy way to keep organized when you have multiple people helping you to setup.

Decorations

Some of the common things that I do for parties include: custom made posters to work with the theme, a photo area (with props if applicable), balloons of course, and a sign for the door. There is always some specific decorating that happens for each party since they are all so unique as well.

Costumes

IMGP9809

If possible I really love to wear a costume. It must be the theatre side of my personality. I love to play dress up still! I didn’t dress up for McKenna’s first birthday but you can bet that I dressed her up! For Brandon’s birthday party I got everyone to dress in “dapper attire”. It really made the whole night a lot more special.

Invitations and Suspense!

McKenna's 1st birthday invite

Sending out invitations in a timely manner can really build suspense for the party itself. When you take care with your invitations you make an impression on everyone that is invited about what kind of effort you put in to make it special. I am learning Photoshop at this point but my SIL is amazingly talented with it and has helped me with many of my party invitations. She has an etsy shop where she offers this service (along with other similar services).

As I mentioned earlier, I’m working on our upcoming gender reveal party and I am soooo excited!! I will share some of the ideas here soon.

TTD right now

Trying to DIY right now…

be healthy tag

I had forgotten how hard it was to get food inside me when I’m pregnant. Nothing sounds good to me most of the time. If I’m lucky enough to have a food sound appetizing you can probably bet that it’s not healthy for me. :-/ Because of this I’ve started looking on pinterest for pregnancy snacks. Generally “pregnancy snacks” mean something filled with protein or maybe other necessary nutrients. I found a few lists of snacks that I’m forcing myself to look over on a regular basis until I pass this stage of pregnancy. Here are some of the ones I’ve found:

FitbottomedMamas.com

RichlyRooted.com

Pickanytwo.net

be thrifty tag

I’m working on using every bit of food that we buy. When we don’t get to it, it goes into the freezer! There are a lot of ways to save food (meal form, puree’d, cooked, raw, etc) At some point I will organize a bunch of ways that I use our freezer to save money.

feed tag

Along with the healthy snacks for me I need to entice McKenna to eat more healthily – a friend turned me onto these muffins that she calls “monster cupcakes” but really they are filled with spinach and banana (plus no frosting, mwa hahahaha)!

maintain tag

I saw a shirt that says “Napping for Two” and that is exactly what I’m doing  (when I can). I have been sooo exhausted. Needless to say I’m back to following the advice I received when McKenna was a baby. If McKenna is sleeping, I’m sleeping.

make stuff tag

I’m making one of my nieces a matching pink sparkly (of course) tutu and super hero cape for her birthday since those are her favorite toys when she comes to our house. Making a tutu is so easy! I’m making up how the cape will be but I plan on doing that as easily as possible but with a little flair.

nest tag

I’m in the middle of working on my command center and laundry room. I am so excited to get both of these done because it will make life soooo much smoother. If paper and laundry take over we are all doomed. If I call for help it may be too late.

raise a little tag

We have been so busy together lately! I’ve been focusing on counting with McKenna and made a cute toy to help that I’ll be sharing. I found this fun mermaid tail craft that I want to do with McKenna and the nieces that come over every week. We are also talking a lot about emotions ever since seeing Inside Out (we loved it!) and I’m hoping that I can help McKenna learn to express herself better and process her emotions. I found a few fun activities on Pinterest that I may share once we’ve tried them out.
